Bar Chatter #41
When it's not enough to make a post, but deserves to go out to the world... it's just Bar Chatter.

I've been seeing this thing where apparently Queen Bey sold people a box for almost $1000 and it was empty. And people are mad? This sounded absurd to me, like maybe a shipping issue or a mistake of some sort. She's an empire, this was done by an intern.

I was mistaken.

She sold a box - for a band - to hold OTHER STUFF you bought from her. The box, designed to "house and display" your Bey vinyl collection, doesn't come with the vinyl you're supposed to display. I can't imagine the Vinyl costing more than $200 total. I seriously have no idea how many pieces of vinyl she's released, but it can't be that many. They bought the box, they don't get no discount? And the box? I've seen Ben on HGTV's Hometown build something like this for funsies. He probably wouldn't have used a faux gator skin strap, but he would have built it using wood from the tree in the backyard of your mother's house you used to sit under and dream about the future.

Sorry tangent.

On the positive, it is numbered. So, yeah.

I apparently live a sheltered life, because there is no way. No way.

It's like the new neighborhood resident thinking it's dumb that the local corner store has a 'No Alligators' sign.

One of the big check marks of the conservative party is that there are just too many regulations. And that we get rid of them, things will just be better. Not sure why they think that but they do. And our current administration is implementing that with speed. And as a result, I think the only FOOD ITEMS not under recall or contamination watch are hydrogenated cookies, tofu and whiskey. Which for the record is not good thing. And because of how much of our needed information is currently disseminated - conspiracy theory, social media, popular TV character screed, and political operative talking point repetition - a lot of people don't quite understand just how much the U.S. government actually does for them. Er, did for them. Because recalling Garlic Powder is a systemic failure of cartoon like proportions.

Capitalism doesn't care if you live or die unless it affects the profit margin. And we're supposed to be better than that.

And for the record, the corner store has a 'No Alligators' sign because Ricky and Earl's Gator Farm and Boat Rental is down the road and Earl will bring The Gen'ral with him to get them two cases of beer he needs to get through the weekend if there ain't no sign. Earl respects signs. And although The Gen'ral has slimmed down as of late, running into an eight hundred pound primal beast while trying to get your scratch-offs and pack of cigs is not experience you want to have more than once. Or ever if you can arrange it.

I play NBA2K. I took the Magic to the Championship in my second year, don't front. But I also play that other mode. That mode that almost nobody plays but is so interesting to me. That other is Franchise mode, where you have to run a franchise - hire a head coach, figure out the practice focus, set the rotations, decide the pace and style of play, deal with injuries, scout future players and, interestingly enough, manage the SALARY CAP.

I said that to say....HOW IN THE HELL DID THE Lakers DO THIS?

They got Bron Bron and Anthony Davis, somehow snookered a trade that got them the services of Russell Westbrook and now can somehow still get an admittedly older Carmelo Anthony?  I mean, I realize Carmelo is at this point chasing a ring and probably only give you 15 to 20 good minutes a night, but he still putting up double figures. Somebody call the commissioner because something is screwy in Hollywood. Even if it was mathematically possible, and this shouldn't be, the Lakers might be in salary cap hell until 2055 behind this.

This ain't right ya'll. You couldn't do this with a cheat code and you damn sure shouldn't be able to do this in real life.

It's like he selling Monorails, I swear...

This year feels strange. The days just seem to have blended together.

California 2020 - No filter

It's like the veneer that kept us from seeing us, who will really are, has faded and all that is left is the cold hard truth about our hopes, dreams, fears and motivations.

We'd all like a respite from this feeling. But it can't be by halves or later. It can't be for some and not others. We all need to get better.

We need to stop thinking we know and listen. Because not listening is how bad things get worse.

Been a long year. And there is still more coming.

Cleaned my fridge out last night, all the stuff I'd wrapped up or put in something that I swore I was going to eat later went in the garbage. I need to do better. Looked in my freezer. I have two and half pounds of shrimp, three steaks, and two pounds of chicken.

I had popcorn for dinner twice this week. Twice!

Oh, yeah. I have to clean up after. Ugh. Now I remember.

But I really, really, like not joking, need to do better.

Sometimes you just need to get away....

I should have been a police investigator.

I say such an odd statement because apparently I have that face, that kind that says you can talk to me, I'm listening, interested and concerned. It's great when I'm actually trying to learn someone but then, out of nowhere people I don't even know tell me all kinds of things. I mean stuff that I wouldn't think you talk about casually, sometimes not even in the dark in impolite company, much less to a middle aged black dude you'd met three minutes prior. Oh, the things I've heard.

I believe I have mentioned this phenomena before, but since I've been hibernating the past few years I hadn't noticed it lately. Well I noticed again, and it is...well, I don't want to say aggravating, but it is troublesome. Because I'm polite, and I know that everyone is fighting their own battle, I try to take the time to let them spill. For some I think it even helps, just the talking. But I keep wondering when someone is going to impart unto me something people take to their grave as though they were sharing who won the game. That's when this thing I do is gonna get me trouble.

Fraiser Crane's Apartment by Nikneuk on Deviant Art.
I fondly remember my first apartment in Atlanta. It was across from a Harry's in a Hurry, Domino's, a Pharmacy, a Steak house and an Ice Cream Parlor, while being  sandwiched between The Landmark Diner and Johnny's Hideaway with a double bonus Waffle House a two minute stroll away. My future real estate agent claimed I had "Convenient-its" for some reason? Weird, right? But one of the best hidden features about that spot was that it was on the top of a four stack. In the winter months, I didn't even have to turn on the heat, as all my vertically diminished neighbors insistence on not freezing kept my place toasty warm. I say this now as I look for my in-house winter clothes. Too cheap to turn on the heat (or too broke, take your pick) in the winter I have a comfy old green fleece pullover and grey sweat pants. And two fleece throws. And I'm thinking about getting a blanket. Man I miss that apartment.

Good Old Sportscenter in it's prime
Sportscenter. Although Fox Sports 1 is a valiant effort, much like the NFL it covers, ESPN is pretty much a natural monopoly. I can watch the same Sportscenter three times in a row, and most fans I know can do the same thing. But I don't like the new set. Just don't. I realize it's designed to make the reporting "more consumable" but, um, no.

The new "improved" Sportscenter - meh.
The old Sportscenter set felt comfortable, intimate, like they were reporting to you. The reporters in close proximity give it a cozy sensation. By contrast, the new Sportscenter set feels like, like the owner of Channel 43¼ is trying to prove that he owns a real TV station. It gives the impression they're announcing from a barn. The new set is too big, to flashy and is just trying way too hard.

There, I've said my piece. Do as you will. Play on.

This right here, this right here is a problem.

Okay, maybe it's me. As a young man burgeoning with emotion as a child, I was told that women value more of what's inside that what's out. Apparently I was told a lie. All that work I put into making myself urbane, cultured and witty, fun to be around and just generally good time doesn't stand a chance against a good jawline and pair of green eyes.

I weep for humanity.

I often hear women complain that men only seem to be after them for the looks, that we're so shallow, etc and so on. That on the left is his recent mug shot picture. That on the right is a mock ad made by someone smitten by him. He is currently in jail. Further, the tattoos on his face and neck do not bode well for his history of life decisions. Sure, he could be a Rhodes scholar or work with homeless puppies, but as it turns out most of his admirers do not care. He's been dubbed Dreamy McMugshot.

Ladies, welcome to the shallow end.

I don't have a lot of time to put together blog posts these days. Very busy. This is about to be quotes and stuff like this for a minute. And stuff I wrote before but never put up. Sigh, priorities have to be in order.

But in the fifteen minutes I took to make sure that America was still a country - politics being what it is these days - and to make sure none of my friends had won the lottery - hey, you know we go back, right? - I saw this thing where you open your music player, ipod, iPhone, G4 or whatever and hit shuffle, then list the first 20 songs that pop up.

It's supposed to tell you something about the person. That they're deep, or insightful or listen to way more rap than you realized existed, or something, I'm not sure what though. But I needed a post and this was simple. So I opened my player, set it shuffle, started the first song then hit next...

Like Water for the Desert (Rain Montuno) - Ottmar Liebert
Day Dreaming - Anthony Hamilton
Leap Frog (Take 7) - Charlie Parker
Uhh Ahh - Boyz II Men
I Forgot To Be Your Lover - Jaheim
Tea for Two - Youmans (Composer)
Caipira - Ottmar Liebert
These Eyes - India Arie
Have You Seen Her - The Chi-Lites
Thug is a Drug - Mos Def
No Ordinary Love -  Sade
Esperanza - Body & Soul
Atomic Dog - George Clinton
The Fifth Symphony - Beethoven
Ms. New Booty - Bubba Sparxx
King of Rock - Run DMC
Grazing in the Grass - Boney James & Rick Braun
Cre-a-tine - Cool Breeze
Morris Brown - Outkast
Love the One You're With - Luther Vandross

So, am I am crazy? Really cool? Pretentious? Or do I own a lot more jazz and old soul than even I realized.

Barkeep, a nice Cabernet if you've got one. And the appetizer menu. Thanks.

Sometimes it ain't enough to equal a whole post, but still needs to be said.... it's bar chatter.

It's been a long time since I did one of these, (2012, really?) but this I have to say....

I didn't really watch How I Met Your Mother a lot. I watched some of the first season, then law school and so now I catch re-runs. But I thought the original premise was cool: A long story about how this guy met his kids mother. I also realize that because TV is a tricky medium with renewals and cast changes, so getting to that titular moment was going to be teased out.

More than few episodes were neatly written. The characters familiarly kooky. The situations just different enough to be fresh. It was a fairly good show.

Then Monday the series ended. And the main character runs to be back with the chick he met in the first episode. Who was not the mother. When the story was supposed to be about meeting the mother. The term McGuffin comes to mind. They could have just called it Friends II if this was the plan, and since they shot the ending nine years ago, it was. I wish the actress playing that "friend" had quit so they would have been forced to do something different, something better.

What would have been better you ask? The whole last season with Ted and the Mother (Tracy) getting to know each other. And the change of the dynamic and the growth of the characters. Instead, we get the a finale that could have been written by M. Night Shyamalan.

It makes me glad it's gone...sorry ass writers.

I should be out this weekend. It's the FAMU v. whoever else is playing Weekend and all my people that I ain't seen in forever are in town. I haven't been out for the whole week's festivities since Law school started in the long ago. The party kicked off on Wednesday, got really rolling Thursday night and started at one in afternoon for the day party on Friday.

I however am just getting over what I think is the flu...and rather than infect half the east coast I have missed everything. Yes, I'm staying home. On a Friday in Atlanta during a be out weekend. Son of a ....

Quite probably Game Day Saturday too, unless I see a big improvement in the next 12 hours. And the house party afterwards!

So bummed right now.

I could comment on the RNC convention, Clint and Chair (a new series on FOX) or the start of the DNC and what they'll need to pull out of their hat. Or on the passing of Micheal Clarke Duncan, who got into acting late in the game and makes me think I could still do it. Or the start of the football season.  Or that out the blue Chatty Mogul called me (why does this person have my phone number?) about some new conspiracy theory.

But no....

Monday morning, Labor Day, I made biscuits. From scratch, just milk, flour and shortening. They came out nice too. Biscuits and syrup, with bacon on the side.

They were so good I had to write about them.

Since Football Season ended a while back, and I go to school, I almost forgot there was a game on. Yeah, Super what? Whatever. Oh, and I had a sincere distaste for both teams playing. And the team I actually had a higher distaste for ended up winning.

It's an NFC East thing, you wouldn't understand.

So this will count as the entirety of my Superbowl post.

How not to endear yourself to your new professor, especially when you've signed up late for the course without consulting them:

"Well, I heard there was no reading."

Since the class is project based I guess that's technically true, but if you say it like not reading is a benefit, you're probably doing it wrong.

So, I guess football season's over.

Yes. It is. This is not up for discussion. I take heart that last year they were abysmal and this year they had a shot at winning the division. When life gives you lemons, you make lemon juice...because for lemonade life has to also supply sugar and water.

I had four things I had to get done during this exam period. One down. I've slept the four hours on the couch I just managed to get up from - and the two hours last night - since Tuesday at 8am. I've eaten one meal in that time. I've come to appreciate the distinct difference between "almost done" and done. I've still got a long way to go and the only reason I'm not feeling horrible about my progress is that on my trip to library today that pretty much wasted my whole day I ran into a classmate that said they're in the same boat in their classes.

And now, looking at the small bottle five hour energy drink ...well, crack by another name ...by my monitor, I think I'm gonna have to step it up a notch.

I went. I saw. I conquered.

Yeah, I won that damn case on Saturday. And that's that.

And afterward, I went home and had me a tall whiskey and soda, fell in the bed and slept 'til morning. And think I went to bed around 9pm. I didn't even realize how serious it was.

Now, onto the rest of it...

I've been getting a lot of traffic on here lately. Okay, I've been getting a lot of traffic on one particular page because it seems that a picture I posted now comes up in a Google search and its very, very popular.

Guess.

And since its the look I'm going for with my radical physical change, that would be a good thing, right? But in reality, all its really doing is screwing up my numbers. Oh, well, even bad publicity is still publicity, right?

I am apparently uninterested in thousands of hits and lots of traffic for this blog.

I've visited other blogs, nosed around a bit, and since this blog contains no nudity or links to it, no funny or artsy picture cavalcade, and only limited political and sports commentary, it's not exactly what you would call a "big draw".

I've considered putting in deceptive search terms to draw in the crowds, but I have to ask myself what am I really looking for in a reader? I'd prefer someone who actually reads this stuff as opposed to someone who clicked in to see the crazy imaginary subject. The lonely soul who might click through to see "buck naked whatever" or retort to a screed such as "that politician is a hucky muck" really aren't my intended audience. I realize the hypocrisy in that statement because I write it, then go look at the stuff, but logic is convoluted. And purple.

This would be a lot easier if I was a comely young coed, who occasionally posted risque personal photos among her mental musings, fashion and weird photographic discoveries. I note that some of those blogs have thousands of followers. But as I is no longer young, and decidedly male...although I am rather good looking, but not comely..., and have decided to continue to post mostly my own written content with the occasional photo enhancement. Okay, it's really that I don't look that great in a thong, so this is what it gon' be.

Still a few comments would be nice.
